ALL OUT EFFORT

PERSONAL TRAINING AND MARTIAL ARTS

We offer in-person fitness and martial arts training at our Los Angeles studio or online. We're vaccinated and wear masks. We are bigotry and judgment-free. Training is a social relationship. To make exercise a lifetime habit, you have to feel safe while training and have a healthy relationship with your trainers. We understand sometimes it takes all-out effort to get through the day, which is why we'll meet you where you are. We train the person before us, not the person we think you ought to be. For us, "personal" means compassion.

Our shared vision

It began for us in 2008. We saw that people needed an environment to train in without feeling bad about themselves. We also understood that our memories live in our bodies. Rather than disembodying ourselves and creating more trauma, we must reembody with care.

There are many obstacles to exercising. Our purpose as trainers is to help clients feel at ease when they train (rather than induce more fear and roadblocks). If training doesn't make you feel bad, you'll keep training. And that's the ultimate goal, to make exercise a lifetime practice. We believe this is why we've been around for so long. Few do what we do.

Highlights From Our Play-Based Martial Arts Program

Some of our clients train in martial arts because it's a way to improve and progress that isn't tied to the scale or how you look. Though it might seem intense, we've found it to be the least toxic. Our martial arts training is always consensual. Everyone decides what the intensity is and what the legal target areas are.

It took months for our clients to progress to this level, but they got good very quickly because we use a play-based learning model. Rather than top-down instruction, you explore your capabilities. We watch to make sure it's done safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is personal training, and how is it different from working out at the gym or with a friend?

There are many ways to understand personal training, but having been trainers for over ten years, we've found the most honest way to understand it is as a social relationship. Regardless of how a client or a trainer sees it, it's ultimately about their relationship. Is there trust? Is there privacy? Is there social responsibility? Do they care about me? Do they make me feel safe, or do they make me feel judged? Do we like each other, or is this purely transactional? Is the trainer trauma-informed, or will they trigger my traumas? Is this a positive relationship, or is this toxic? Is this adversarial and antagonistic or healthy?

A healthy social relationship is ultimately a safe one. Not just physically but also mentally and emotionally. The gym can be an oppressive space, not just full of judgment, but for women and marginalized people, a harmful space to exist in. Exercising itself can have us feeling vulnerable. We, as your trainers, help guide you through this delicate practice so that you can build a positive relationship with yourself that can last your lifetime and beyond. Whether we know it or not, our relationship with our bodies becomes a model for others, whether positive or negative.

Building a positive relationship with exercise, health, and your body can be beyond the scope and personal responsibility of your friends and loved ones. (You might not even want to go there with them.) This can be beyond the scope and social responsibility of many in the fitness and wellness industry. But for us, health means safety, security, and positive relationships. “Personal” means compassion.

Do I need to be in shape to work with you?

No. We understand it sometimes takes all-out effort just to make it through the day. So we'll meet you where you are. We believe there should be no gatekeeping or elitism when it comes to health and exercise. We're not looking to beat you down or make you feel bad about yourself. Instead, we want to build you up and make exercise a continuous practice.

What is inclusivity, and what does it mean to be bigotry and judgment-free?

Inclusivity in the training space doesn't just mean every race, gender, and sexual orientation. It also means every body type. Every person deserves to feel safe in their training environment.

How much does it cost?

$60-$80 a session based on the package size. We haven't raised our rates in 15 years, and if you are in economic hardship, we're willing to listen.

What is your availability?

We work seven days a week, mainly in the mornings. We take some afternoon and early evening appointments, but we've found it's better to start your day with exercise than to end your day with it. Work has a way of draining you and killing motivation. We get that.

Why is the consultation free, and why can't I buy sessions off the website or Yelp?

Because we see personal training as a social relationship, the consultation is not only a time to assess your health but also a time to get to know each other. Personal training is a big decision, so we need a chance to see if we'll get along without any pressure. Selling packages without getting to know each other is purely transactional—it doesn't matter if we get along. Imagine committing to ten dates with someone you don't even know.

Personal training shouldn't be adversarial and antagonistic. We should like you, and you should like us. The consultation is like a first date, which is why it's free with no strings attached. If we feel good about it, we move forward. If we don't, we can all walk away without feeling bad.
